Afternoon Tea, Wokingham - Berkshire
Afternoon tea is a light meal typically eaten between 3pm and 5pm. The tradition of drinking tea originated in England when Catherine of Bragança married Charles II in 1661 and brought the practice of drinking tea in the afternoon with her from Portugal.
Anna Maria Russell, Duchess of Bedford, was the first person to have transformed afternoon tea in England into a late-afternoon meal rather than a simple refreshment, At that time lunch was served early and dinner was served late in the evening about 9pm. The Duchess apparently became hungry in the afternoon and asked for some tea, bread and butter and cake to be brought to her room. This soon became a habit and the Duchess started to invite friends round to join her, and quickly it became fashionable to take tea in the middle of the afternoon.
New generations are rediscovering the civilised pleasure of a traditional afternoon tea with its elegant settings, dainty sandwiches, meticulously arranged plates of delicious scones, clotted cream and preserves, cakes and perfectly brewed cups of tea.
